We talk to a lot of rights owners and streaming broadcasters about the value of content and the need to protect it. And recently, Amazon actually put a very big number on the value of content when they purchased the back catalogue of movies and TV shows from iconic MGM for a staggering $8.45 billion!

“MGM has a vast, deep catalogue of much beloved intellectual property. With the talent at Amazon and MGM studios, we can reimagine and develop that IP for the 21st century,” said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

Premium Film and TV Content Expands Amazon’s Streaming Video Service

The acquisition allows Amazon to boost its existing Prime Video service with film classics from The Magnificent Seven and Poltergeist to the Pink Panther, as well as acclaimed series such as The Handmaid’s Tale and Fargo. The 97-year-old film studio’s extensive content catalogue includes more than 4,000 films and 17,000 hours of TV.

There’s no question Amazon knows the value of content. But even more importantly perhaps, they also know the need to protect it.

Piracy, One of the Biggest Threats to Content Value

Amazon invests heavily in their anti-piracy technology stack to ensure piracy (in all forms) doesn’t erode the value of their content. As part of that world-class tech stack, we’re happy to note they rely on GeoComply’s world-leading VPN and proxy detection solution, GeoGuard, to protect their territorially restricted content from geo-piracy and geolocation fraud. GeoGuard is the only VPN and proxy detection solution with 99.6% accuracy, detecting even the most advanced location spoofing methods such as hijacked residential IPs and VPN over proxies.

Amazon uses GeoGuard not only to protect their own content but they have also integrated it into their CDN, Amazon CloudFront, to protect the content their streaming video customers deliver over CloudFront. This integration enables streaming service providers to purchase and deploy GeoGuard with the flick of a switch. Industry-wide, Amazon has raised the bar for both content acquisition and content protection – whether that content includes classic movies, the latest releases, or live sports streams.
